Your Child Doesn’t Like Brushing? Here Are Some Tips!

It is sometimes difficult to make young children understand why brushing their teeth is so important. Many parents are going through an ongoing struggle in encouraging their young ones to have this done at least twice a day. And if you have children who refuse to brush their teeth, know that you are not alone. But let this article walk you through the things that you can do to motivate them to improve their brushing and flossing habits.

Personalize Toothbrush And Toothpaste

When you are going shopping, why not bring your kids along so they can pick their own toothbrushes and toothpaste. Some toothbrushes are designed with their favorite cartoon character, superhero, or Disney princess. And when it comes to toothpaste, there are flavored ones that are more appealing for kids. Pick a mild one for your young children. Remember that the bitter and strong taste of adult toothpaste might traumatize your child.

Brush to a Song

To help your child get motivated to brush their teeth correctly, why not have them brush to a song? Remember that dentists recommend brushing for at least two minutes. So bring your phone with you when it’s brushing time and play a song that they love dancing with. The beat will keep them enjoyed and they will be done with their two minutes in no time.

Toothache

The Reward System

Although not all parents would agree to this, some swear to its efficacy. Create a sticker chart specifically for their brushing schedules. Have them pick a sticker and place it on their chart after they have brushed their teeth. Then at the end of the week, give them a reward for a job well done. Most kids, especially the older ones will be convinced  to cooperate  if there is a prize involved.

Talk About Toothache

Plans didn’t work? Then take your efforts up a notch. Kids don’t like pain. That is something that many of them are afraid of. So why not talk to your child about the repercussions of not taking care of their teeth and gums? Talk about Toothache. If they love watching videos online, find an informative video for children that discusses toothache pain and other dental problems. Remember that the purpose is to educate and not to scare them.

Starting good dental hygiene at an early age is very important. That is why as challenging as it may seem, parents and guardians should not get tired of reminding them to brush their teeth before going to school and before bedtime. This way, they will develop this good habit and continue practicing it until they are adults.
